I've never found it worth the effort to go to that length, though, because. This means to get the longest theoretical shelf life out of a piece of meat, leave it outdoors and raw until it drops to 50%, then take it inside and cook it, and the store it outdoors. Cooked meats decay slower than raw meats. Meats and most dry goods (candy bars, energy bars, airline dinners) decay slower outdoors than indoors. Most canned items (beans, peaches, sardines, soda) decay slower indoors than outdoors. The only relevant consideration there is that ruined items despawn when inside containers, but do not despawn when in the open, so food items should never be stored or left in containers unless for some reason other than practicality. Degradation of food items does not appear to be affected by being stored in or out of containers.
